Frequently Asked Questions

What is Occupational Therapy?   child playiing with dough and cutters

Children’s Occupational Therapists (OT’s) help your child to reach their full potential. This can include self-help skills (dressing, completing fastenings, toileting and knife and fork skills), school work (handwriting, scissor skills, drawing, concentration skills, following instructions and the ability to complete PE based activities) and leisure (playing, throwing and catching a ball).

We can teach these skills as well as the underlying foundation skills needed to achieve functional goals through play!

Can a parent refer a child or young person for assessment and treatment?

Yes!

Your child does not need to have a formal diagnosis, if you have concerns how your child is coping at school or completing age appropriate tasks at home then they may benefit from an OT screening or assessment.

Also if your child is due to start school soon, a screening of their fine motor skills maybe beneficial before they start.

How much will it cost?

I offer a number of tailored OT packages to meet you and your child's needs.  Please contact me for full costings.

I can complete OT packages for schools and nurseries also.

How quickly will I have the assessment report?

My assessment reports are detailed and take time to evaluate and complete, I aim to have them completed within two weeks following the assessment.

Can a child or young person be seen by NHS Therapists in addition to Independent Therapists?

Yes, having worked in the NHS for many years I am aware that the NHS waiting list can be long and/ or the input may be limited due to their resources.  I am very keen to work closely with NHS staff as well as schools to help get the best result for your child.

Do you complete school visits?

Yes, I can include a school visit as part of the assessment process or during the treatment block.  I can hand over programmes and recommendations to school staff. As well as observe your child in their school environment to assess their needs and look to see if any environmental adaptations need to be made for them. I am also able to offer termly school reviews to adapt and modify OT recommendations.

My therapy packages are flexible to help meet the needs of your child.

Do you do tribunals?

No, this is something I do not have the experience or training for.  I don't feel I would be best person to support you or your child in a tribunal.
